base เป็น anhydrous-ปราศจากน้ำ , and immiscible-ไม่สามารถผสมกันได้ c skin secretion
ointment ปกด medica , mixture of medicament dissolve and disperse-กระจายตัว
BP – British Pharmacopoeia – ointment prep ทั้ง immiscible , miscible or emulsifiable c skin secretion
hydrophobic ointment and water emulsifying ointment – intent to applied skin / mucous memb for emollient – ทั้ง protective ,therapeutic , prophylactic purpose
-และสามารถ degree of occlusion
ส่วน hydrophilic ointment เป็น miscible c skin secretion , less emollient
Ointment bases base of traditional ointment ปกด – mix of waxes , fats, oils
– waxes – solid/hard at room temp
– fat – semi solid , soft at ,,
– oils – liquid at ,,
change temp สามารถ effect กับ physical state of base – eg coconut oil เป็น solid ใน winter แต่ liquid in summer
การเติม wax เพื่อให้ ointment – smoother , lighter
alter -proportion of – oil , fat, wax – in ointment – vary consistency
eg ถ้า extra oil – ทำให้ ointment stiffer
ถ้า extra oil – ทำให้ ointment less vicous
p 158 และยังขึ้นกับ storage or climatic condition เช่นใช้ยาใน tropics or Arctic
Different types of ointment base
Hydrocarbon bases – immiscible c water , ไม่ absorb by skin
ปกด softparaffin , หรือ mix soft + hard+ liquid paraffin
เพราะตัว paraffin form เป็น greasy water , proof film on skin
inh water loss from skin – ทำให้ improve hydration – Rx dry scaly
Absorption bases – good emollients , less occlusive แต่ easy apply กว่า hydrocarbon base

✮Non emulsified – absorb water – เพื่อ form water in oil emulsion
ปกด hydrocarbon + water in oil emulsified eg Wool Alcohol BP or Wool Fat BP
