“General Boonsin” – a simple, down-to-earth man – has ignited nationalism in the hearts of Gen Z and even Gen Alpha, in a way that astonishes the world.
During 2020–2021, the “three-finger salute” phenomenon spread alarmingly among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, escalating further with the emergence of progressive activist groups such as “Ratsadon,” “Thalu Wang,” “Thalu Gas,” “Dao Din,” and others.
This wave of political expression among the youth enabled the Move Forward Party to grow rapidly, eventually winning the 2023 election.
The spread of orange politics across the country caused the “elites” great anxiety, pushing them into making “secret cross-faction deals” with Thaksin and the establishment.
Then came the Thai–Cambodian border crisis in 2025, coinciding with the “Boonsin phenomenon.” Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, commander of the 2nd Army Region, toured schools nationwide with daily talk shows, becoming a teenage influencer and idol.
Just before September 30, 2025, the Army approved military aircraft for “General Kung” (Lt. Gen. Boonsin) and “General Tod” (Maj. Gen. Winthai Suwaree, Army spokesperson) to travel across the country, with the aim of instilling patriotism in students.
The “Boonsin phenomenon” reflects a shocking surge of nationalism, which in turn made the “three-finger wave” fade away.
Meanwhile, the decision of the orange party politburo to vote for Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister, forming a minority government, caused turmoil among its members and alienated many academic allies of the “three-finger” movement.
Thus, four months before parliament is dissolved, orange leaders face a crisis of credibility over their support for Anutin.
Back in 2009–2011, Thai–Cambodian border clashes also broke out, but nationalist sentiment was not as strong as today. The difference lies in the power of social media. In the influencer age, anyone can set themselves up as an independent broadcaster, making Lt. Gen. Boonsin celebrated like a prophet or national hero.
The Boonsin phenomenon reflects a society yearning for a hero to defend sovereignty, while politics under the Paetongtarn government appears weak and ambiguous on border issues.
“General Kung” Boonsin is a true son of Isan (Northeast). He is not a polished speaker, but his straightforward, sincere expression of love for the nation has become his trademark.
His defiant statement before the five-day war – “This land has always been ours. If you want it, let’s duel. That’s all. Nothing difficult about it” – deeply moved Thais.
Surprisingly, such “old-fashioned” words, dismissed by progressive academics, resonated strongly with Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
Although polls (such as NIDA Poll) still show Nattapong Rueangpanyawut and the People’s Party leading in popularity, nationalism makes many orange supporters hesitant to oppose the tide.
As a result, during the conflict, People’s Party and Progressive Movement leaders tried to promote a “progressive nationalism” to counter the emotional appeal of the Boonsin phenomenon.
Nevertheless, since Anutin became prime minister, the People’s Party has been on the defensive, battered by two waves:
- Backlash against its decision to ally with the blue party, an ideological opposite.
- The Boonsin phenomenon, which has drawn away voters from both Gen X and Gen Z.
Even “Yellow Shirts” disillusioned with Prayuth, who had turned to Move Forward in 2023, quickly flocked to Boonsin’s side.
Observers say the youth nationalism sparked by Boonsin will be harvested by new “self-made youth politicians.”
In the next election, especially in the Northeast, the People’s Party may lose its monopoly over Gen Z votes, as these young voters now idolize a new wave of “youth politicians.”
Today, mid-sized parties have become hubs for these new politicians, even building “armies of artists” to capture the youth vote, with Mahasarakham province as a stronghold.
The Bhumjaithai Party may benefit somewhat from Boonsin’s popularity, though less than the new parties.
The Pheu Thai Party, however, will be hit hardest by the Boonsin phenomenon, potentially dropping its Northeast MPs from over 100 to fewer than 30.
The Boonsin phenomenon has eased elite anxiety over the orange wave that swept the country two years ago. Who would have thought that today Gen Z and Gen Alpha would be more patriotic than the baby boomers?
Analysis
It also highlights a paradox: Gen Z and Alpha, often seen as progressive, can swing rapidly toward nationalism when a charismatic symbol emerges.
Political Shifts:
The text frames a dramatic transformation in Thai politics, where a military figure, Lt. Gen. Boonsin, unexpectedly captures the imagination of young generations (Gen Z, Alpha).
This undercuts the progressive, reformist momentum of the Move Forward Party and “three-finger” activists.
Nationalism vs. Progressivism:
Boonsin embodies traditional nationalism, expressed in simple, emotional language.
Despite sounding old-fashioned, his authenticity resonates with youth more than the complex rhetoric of progressive academics.
Role of Social Media:
Social media amplifies Boonsin’s persona, turning him into an influencer-hero.
This reflects the shift in how authority figures connect with the younger generation—not through formal politics, but via platforms and personality-driven narratives.
Party Politics:
The Move Forward/People’s Party faces internal crises: ideological compromise (supporting Anutin) and the loss of its youthful base.
Mid-sized and new parties may capitalize on the situation, while Pheu Thai risks the steepest decline.
Historical Context:
Nationalist sentiment during the 2009–2011 Thai-Cambodian border clashes was weaker, showing how media ecosystems and generational psychology now make nationalism more explosive.
Sociological Meaning:
The “Boonsin phenomenon” symbolizes a society longing for a strong protector figure in times of uncertainty.
