Electrosurgical Generator (ESU)
The power source that converts electrical energy into high-frequency energy.
::: ESU component
Design of a High-Frequency Electrosurgical Generator
1. Components
- AC Power Supply (Main Input)
- Converts mains AC (110V/220V) into a usable voltage.
- Provides stable power to the generator circuit.
- Transformer (Step-up/Step-down)
- Adjusts voltage levels as required by the system.
- Rectifier & Filter Circuit
- Converts AC to DC (rectification) for smooth voltage output.
- Uses diodes and capacitors for stabilization.
- Oscillator Circuit (High-Frequency Signal Generator)
- Converts DC voltage into high-frequency AC (typically 300 kHz – 4 MHz).
- Uses MOSFETs, IGBTs, or Class-D RF Amplifiers to generate the required frequency.
- Power Amplifier
- Increases the power of the high-frequency signal.
- Ensures the output is strong enough for tissue cutting and coagulation.
- Output Circuit (Electrode Control)
- Regulates and directs the high-frequency energy to the active electrode (handpiece).
- Uses different waveforms for cutting, coagulation, and blending modes.
- Control Unit (Microcontroller or Analog Controls)
- Allows adjustment of power levels.
- Controls cutting and coagulation modes.
- Includes a user interface (LCD, knobs, or touch controls).
- Feedback and Safety Mechanisms
- Impedance monitoring (to detect changes in tissue resistance).
- Overload protection (prevents overheating).
- Return electrode monitoring (prevents patient burns in monopolar mode).
Working Principle
- AC Power Conversion:
- The generator receives mains AC voltage and converts it to DC using a rectifier.
- High-Frequency Oscillation:
- A high-frequency oscillator circuit (300 kHz – 4 MHz) converts DC into AC.
- The power is amplified for surgical use.
- Electrode Output Control:
- The electrode handpiece delivers energy in monopolar or bipolar mode.
- The frequency and power adjust based on tissue type and surgical need.
- Tissue Interaction:
- The high-frequency energy heats and vaporizes the tissue.
- Adjusting power affects cutting vs. coagulation.
Optional Features
✅ Touchscreen interface for easy power adjustments.
✅ Wireless foot pedal control for hands-free operation.
✅ Smoke evacuation system to remove surgical fumes.
✅ Battery backup for emergency use.
